The Panama Jazz Festival comes to you from 13 January to 18 January for those that love Jazz. This week of events is set to take place at the City of Knowledge on Clayton. Schedule can be seen at www.panamajazzfestival.com
On Saturday the 25th of January, the Amador Regatta for the first challenge towards the annual ocean to ocean cayuco race will take place from the Balboa Yacht Club, out to Flamenco Island and return. Cheer on your team, or get to know what this annual event is all about, and enjoy a late morning to mid afternoon day at the BYC.
The Jazz & Blues Festival will take place in Boquete's Valle Escondido Amphitheater from February 13 to 16, 2014.
All Star Musicians such as Chris Thomas King, Andy Egert, Billy C. Wirtz, the Downtown Blues Band, Chuck Beattie, and others will be playing at this event.
Check out www.boquetejazzandbluesfestival.com for more information. Quite a few members will be heading that way to enjoy the 2 days (15th & 16th) of open air shows, along with jam sessions throughout the event.
The Olga Sinclair Foundation is offering a free workshop on Saturday, 18 January from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Prado in Balboa.
This is an attempt at the world record to have more than 3,800 kids between the ages of 1 and 18 to paint collectively with the theme being the 100 Year's of the Panama Canal. The foundation will provide all necessary material free of charge to those wishing to participate.

Panama Flag returns to Panama

THE PANAMANIAN FLAG whose raising changed the history of Panama, and cost the lives of numerous students, returned to the city on Saturday January 4, and was received with full military honors.
The national homeland flag arrived atTocumenInternational Airport at 5:00, from Spain, where it had been restored. Because of its fragile state it traveled in in a temperaturecontroled box.
The flag was received by the Interior Minister, Jorge Ricardo Fabrega, and Rimsky Sucre, president of the Association of the National Institute of 1964.
Following a tour of the city after leaving Tocumen, the emblem is resting in the Ascanio Arosemena Training Center where it can be seen by the public from January 9, which marks the 50th anniversary of the seminal event that cost the lives of many students, but ultimately led to the signing of an agreement to hand control of the Canal to Panama, at the turn of the century.
Following a tour of the city after leaving Tocumen, the emblem is resting in the Ascanio Arosemena Training Center where it can be seen by the public from January 9, which marks the 50th anniversary of the seminal event that cost the lives of many students, but ultimately led to the signing of an agreement to hand control of the Canal to Panama, at the turn of the century.
The former Ave July 4 was renamed Avenida de Los Martires, which carries a sculpture of the students raising the flag.
The decision to restore the flag was due to an initiative of the Citizens Movement for Strengthening National Identity, which had the support of the board of the Panama Canal Authority.
On January 9 there will be a gala musical activities as part of the centenary of the Panama Canal as a tribute to the meaning the date has to Panamanians.
The tribute will take place right in the place where Panamanian students arrived on January 9, 1964 to claim the right to hoist of the national flag at what was then the School of Balboa in the Canal Zone .
That night, there will be a musical gala in honor of the historic date with the musical performance of the National Symphony Orchestra, the Polyphonic Choir voices Panama and Panamanian Ricardo Velasquez, Janelle Davidson, and Nicole Puga and Manuel Corredera Puga

AS THE DENGUE death toll in the current Panama outbreak climbed to six, health authorities have asked the Cabinet Council, to declare the country a "dengue epidemic area."
Javier Diaz, head of the Ministry of Health (MoH), said the purpose is to force the population to cooperate with the elimination of breeding sites of Aedes aegypti , as the only measure to end the cycle of disease.
With this decision, said Diaz, government institutions and private companies must collaborate with dengue prevention.
This involves monitoring work areas to prevent outbreaks of infestation and to campaign to raise awareness of the importance of combating the disease.
A document presented to Cabinet warns that if institutions do not cooperate is liable to a fine between $ 50 and $ 5000, although sanctions may raise up to $1 million in case of repeat offenses.
Official reports indicate that six people are currently hospitalized on suspicion of severe dengue.

Cost overruns are threatening to shut down a multibillion-dollar expansion of the Panama Canal aimed at allowing the world’s largest ships to pass through the short cut between the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.
A European consortium funding the project says it won’t continue the work until Panama coughs up the extra cash — which amounts to $1.6 billion over and above an original $3.2 billion bid to build a third set of locks.
Spanish builder Sacyr, the leader of a consortium known as Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), which includes Impreglio of Italy, Belgian firm Jan De Nul and Constructora Urbana of Panama, has given the Panama Canal Authority 21 days to come “in line with the contractual terms” or it will halt the project.
Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli says he will personally travel to Italy and Spain to get the dispute settled, saying those nations “have a moral responsibility” to help resolve the dispute and get the project back on course.
“It’s not possible for a company to just announce an enormous amount of cost overruns, when they had already fixed a price,” Martinelli said. “And now they’re coming forward saying that the price has risen.”

The U.S. Embassy in Panama City informs U.S. citizens that FRENADESO (FRENTE NACIONAL POR LA DEFENSA DE LOS DERECHOS ECONOMICOS Y SOCIALES PANAMÁ) is planning a march in Clayton today, January 3, 2014. The march is scheduled to begin at the traffic circle where Clayton and Albrook intersect at approximately 4:00 p.m. and proceed to the U.S. Embassy where the marchers plan to hold a demonstration.
The march is not expected to turn violent. However, it is expected to impede traffic flow both through the area and especially in and out of the Embassy. U.S. Citizens should plan their travel accordingly and avoid all confrontations. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
