Martinelli wants Euro as legal currency in Panama
While financial markets around the world hedge their bets on the survival of the Euro it has been endorsed by President Ricardo Martinelli who wants to introduce the Euro alongside the dollar as legal currency in Panama.
German news agency DPAreported on Monday October 15, that in meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel he expressed his confidence in the euro and announced his country will seek mechanisms to implement the European single currency alongside the U.S. dollar as legal currency. "Ihavefull confidence in the euro and the German and European economies," he said. Referring to the economic crisis in Europe he added - "This is momentary. Ii am that sure, because of the creative capacity of this great continent it will not be impeded, and Europe will be successful."
After the meetings in Berlin he said "Panama is a country where the free currency is the U.S. dollar …we are seeking mechanisms so that the euro is also a legal currency, that there is an acceptance of the euro."
Martinelli travelled to Germany to meet with political and business leaders during his first official visit to the country. Martinelli and Merkel agreed on the need to intensify bilateral relations. "We look forward to closer ties, there is much potential," Merkel mentioned the construction,renewable energy and aviation industries as possible ways in which the country’s can work together.
Martinelli noted Panama's strategic geographic position with "the largest free trade area in the world. " Its ports, "can become the port of entry for German trade and industry into the Americas." he said.
Martinelli also referred to plans to expand the number of flights between the two countries. "We want more connections between Panama and Germany" he said.
The leaders also addressed the possible signing of a double taxation treaty in order to improve the opportunities of investment for companies.
Another measure aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations will be the opening of the first German school in Panama on land provided by the government.
